It was another first Saturday of the month, which meant cars were gathering in the parking lot at the Peninsula Shopping Center. However this Saturday had a theme… as Shelby Cobra, after Shelby Cobra pulled in, it was clear that this month’s gathering was in tribute to the late Carroll Shelby. Eventually the lot was full of Cobras, GT350s and GT500s.
Carroll Shelby was an iconic figure in the world of motorsports. After a successful career as a race car driver in which he won the 24 hours at Le Mans, Shelby went on to become a famed automobile designer. In his desire to compete with the European car manufacturers on the European circuits, Shelby partnered with British AC Motors Company and using their chassis and a Ford V8, created what we now know as the Shelby Cobra. The Cobra of the 1960’s has become the quintessential classic race car and originals are highly sought after and fetch astronomical prices at auction.
Shelby went on to design cars with the Big 3 Detroit automakers, most notably with Ford, and although he is no longer with us, his name continues to grace high-powered American muscle cars. In tribute to the late Carroll Shelby, Shelby American and Ford unveiled an 850-hp 2013 Ford Shelby GT500 Cobra at Pebble Beach this summer. The name Shelby will forever be synonymous with power and performance – two things that will never go out of style with car enthusiasts and collectors alike.
